COFFS HARBOUR  IN GARLAMBIRLA  language is called  THE GUMBAYNGGIRR means casuarinas . This three  has many varieties in the are . There are  types which grow in  forested wetlands ,other  in windswept headlands and some also grow in pleasant , well  sheltered forests. The seeds of Casuarina ,  in its  woody fruit are food source for black cockatoo.  When in Coffs Harbour  , visit to Park Beach provides opportunity to  walk to the Macauleys Headland where mighty views of the ocean can also   provide experience of observing passing parade of migrating whales . Here in this Headland  , with whisper  of the bush , swaying grasses  and singing music of the casuarinas branches one can easily start to fantasize  about dreaming story related to giant goanna. The story  GUMGALI people of  GUMBAYNGGIRR , of Coffs Harbour  ,is very much  treasured  in their tales.

The western name of the Coffs Harbour dates to the XIX century  when  and John Korff  named the area Korff’s Harbour while being to seek shelter from powerful storm . It was 1847, but in 1861  some error took place and accidentally name was changed by the surveyor for the crown to Coffs Harbour. In its early history town was centre for timber industry , while now it is important tourist centre , with beautiful beaches , lovely hilly country side where , due to the mild climate even bananas were growing and were farmed of commercial scale .

Coffs Harbour  in early days of its  history was depending on its rivers of the region . Until opening of the  North Coast Railway Line  these waterways presented great opportunity to move the timber to the awaiting boats . Some by the historical jetty  in Coffs Harbour Bay . This jetty is  biggest timber jetty in NSW and was constructed in 1892 . Ironbark, Grey Gum, White Mahogany, Tallowwood, Grey Box and Turpentine being local trees were used to construct this ocean jetty .
